Weaving
is one of the oldest artforms in the world. It is also one of the most
functional. Weaving is the process of interlacing yarn, string, thread,
etc. to create cloth or an object. We used a plastic cup as our loom,
the item that holds the yarn. Typically, other yarn would be used but
this is an introductory lesson. Full yarn weaving takes place in 4th
grade. We experimented with many types and textures of yarn.

Pablo
Picasso was one of the founders of Cubism. We studied the painting
"The Three Musicians" and found that there are actually
4 musicians in the paiting. We looked at how Picasso used lots of
corners and distorted shapes to create his people. We talked about
distortion, Cubism, mysteries, and instruments in this lesson.

Fish
come in all shapes and sizes. They live in different areas of the world
in different kinds of water. There are thousands of varieties of fish.
Fish are covered with scales and use gills to breathe. Their skin is
textured or made rough by the scales. We created fish using glue, chalk
and construction paper. The colored glue created a rough texture, mimicing
the scales of a fish. We also did rubbings of the fish before we added
the chalk.

With the fall
coming, 3rd graders looked at pumpkins and we created a
glue drawing. We talked about perspective. The pumpkins
that are farther away are covered by the other pumpkins,
called overlapping. We used black paper and chalk to create
these nighttime pumpkin patches.

Symmetry
is commonly found in nature in flowers, leaves, faces and
also in insects. We looked at how the bodies and wings of
insects are the same on both sides. Each student created
an imaginary symmetrical insect body. We then used a mosaic
style to fill in the shape created. The mosaic pieces are
made from magazine pages. The simulated tiles are also symmetrical.
