Pablo Picasso was a Spanish sculptor & painter who created several new styles of Art. One of his most important discoveries was that of Cubism. Cubism takes a regular object and forms it into a flat lines and shapes. It almost appears as if you were looking through a bug's eye. His portraits of human figures done in the cubist style were well renowned. We created human faces in the Cubist style using oil pastels for color.

Perspective is a drawing technique used to show depth and space. As objects get farther away, they appear to be getting smaller. These students created a landscape that shows perspective. A landscape is an artwork that has land, sky, a horizon line and is outside.

The larger trees appear closer to us and the smaller trees appear farther away. The students created a painting on top of their drawing using fall or warm colors for the ground. This shows the leaves that have fallen from their trees. The sky was painted using nighttime or cool colors.

The Second Graders worked on creating symmetrical patterned cowboy hats as an introduction to our next lesson. It also incorporates their classroom experiences into art.

Faith Ringgold is an African American artist who is well known for her painted story quilts. One of her most famous quilts is called Tar Beach. The quilt was made into a book, which we are lucky to have in our school library. We read the book and talked about how Cassie Lightfoot dreamed about flying over her city. She would fly over buildings and places that were important to her family. Our quilt is made of dreams for our families.
